The architecture, although modern and dazzlingly white, was modeled on the more traditional buildings of Tunisia, complete with narrow streets and arches. The seaside hotels extend from Sousse itself along the kilometers of the sparkling clean sea to the port of El Kantaoui and to the north of the port.
In style, the port area of Port El Kantaoui is designed as a white and blue Tunisian white village, with a quarter of medina reproduced and cobbled streets. It is popular with package visitors, families and first-time visitors, however, the extended scenery and detachment of true Tunisia bring criticism; especially Rough Guide described Port El Kantaoui as "Tunisia without tears, artificial, without soul, even anemic".
