Since ancient maritime city, located 140 km from Tunis, Sousse is built on the Mediterranean coast of Tunisia.
Name: Hadrumete (Punic), Colonia Ulpia Trajana Augusta Frugifera Hadrumetina (Roman), Harinicopolis (Vandal), Justiniano (Byzantine), Soussa (Arabic).
History
Phoenician colony, Carthage Hadrumetum come under the domination of the late century. VI BC Allied with Rome against Carthage, get free city status (year 146 AD) and is promoted to the rank of honorary Romanian colony during the reign of Trajan (c. II) and at the end of sec. III under Diocletian, became the capital Byzacenei. In the fourth century the population is majority Christian. Later, the name gets Hunericopolis Hadrumetul Vandals occupied (V th) and occupied Byzantine Justianopolis (sec. VI).
